Versoix in the Ice Age

It’s been 10 days now, and the quay at Versoix (near Geneva, Switzerland) is still encased in ice. The cars are still frozen solid. Immovable.

What is there to say? Let my photos say it for me …

The trapped cars have become a tourist attraction ...

... photographed from all angles ...

... and after dark - when the temperature falls and freezes them even more solidly

The harbour edge is a skating rink ...

... and boats have sunk weighed down by the weight of ice and water

People gaze up the lake, wondering when it will end

This is not some glacier in the Antarctic ...

... it's the quay where, in summer, bather lounge

Night falls, and the temperature drops still lower

When will it end?

  1. Unbelievable photos, specially the yellow endofday snow. OOOOOHHH.

  2. Beautiful pictures!

I’m curious to know if the cars still work once they’ve thawed out?

    • Thanks Miranda.

I’m not a mechanic (so don’t quote me on this) but I’m pretty sure that the cars will work perfectly well once the ice has melted off. Provided they have been serviced properly, with enough antifreeze in the cooling system, I can see no reason why they shouldn’t start and run. The ice is purely an external coating.

But I could be wrong. Anyone know any more about this?

  3. Beautiful photos, Alistair, particularly the last one. Hope it warms up soon…
